**TORONTO** – Bruce Springsteen gave a heartfelt speech at the premiere of his new documentary “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band” at the Toronto International Film Festival, revealing details about his wife Patti Scialfa’s cancer battle and the enduring strength of his band.
The documentary, which provides a behind-the-scenes look at their latest tour, revealed that Scialfa, 71, has been battling multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, since 2018.
Springsteen, 74, spoke about the unwavering support he receives from Scialfa and the E Street Band, acknowledging their essential role in his success as a frontman. He described the sense of unity and camaraderie within the band, stating, “You’re not alone. When I see Jake, I also see Clarence.”
Reflecting on their five decades together, Springsteen expressed the remarkable bond they share, saying, “We’ve got the only job where the people you went to high school with, at 75, you’re still with those people.” He acknowledged the life experiences they’ve shared, from marriages and divorces to personal triumphs and tragedies.
Springsteen pointed out the rarity of a band lasting this long, noting that most bands inevitably break up. He emphasized the unique strength of the E Street Band, saying, “They can’t even get two guys to stay together. Simon hates Garfunkle. Sam hates Dave.”
Despite his vows to continue touring, Springsteen expressed his contentment with the band’s journey, stating, “If I went tomorrow, it’s OK. What a f—kin’ ride.”
The premiere of “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band” at the Toronto International Film Festival showcased not only the enduring power of Springsteen’s music but also the profound bond that connects him to his wife and bandmates.
