Tue Sep 10 00:08:00 UTC 2024: ## Aiken City Considering Solutions to Protect Whiskey Road Wall After Repeated Accidents

Aiken, SC – The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is working with the City of Aiken to address a recurring problem: repeated collisions with a brick wall at the intersection of Whiskey and Coker Springs Roads. The wall, protecting the Winter Colony estate known as Rond Point, has been struck at least seven times since 2019.

Aiken City Manager Stuart Bedenbaugh reported receiving a call from South Carolina Transportation Secretary Justin Powell on August 30th, discussing potential solutions. The SCDOT safety engineer is evaluating several options, which are still under development but will be announced once finalized. The city and SCDOT will collaborate on the chosen solution.

Senator Tom Young, representing Senate District 24, has been instrumental in bringing attention to this issue. The wall’s owner, Chris Eaton, had previously stated she would not repair the wall until SCDOT implemented protective measures.

This news comes as the Aiken City Council approved several other measures at their recent meeting, including the second and final readings of ordinances regarding the city’s right of refusal on property purchases, building façades in Aiken Towne Park, and annexation of single-family homes. They also approved the first reading of an ordinance allocating budget surplus and issued proclamations for Constitution Week.
