Mon Sep 09 13:13:01 UTC 2024: ## Experience Trumps Flair: KL Rahul to Lead India in Bangladesh Series Despite Sarfaraz Khan’s Impressive Debut

**Chennai:** Despite Sarfaraz Khan’s impressive debut performance against England, veteran batsman KL Rahul is set to lead India in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh starting September 19th in Chennai. This decision, according to BCCI sources, prioritizes experience ahead of raw talent, with the focus firmly set on the crucial tour of Australia later this year.

While Sarfaraz, with his fearless approach and impressive footwork, showcased immense potential in the recent home series against England, Rahul’s experience of 50 Test matches, including a century in South Africa and 86 runs in his last Test before injury, tipped the scales in his favor. He further solidified his position with a half-century in the recent Duleep Trophy.

“The team management is not just looking at Bangladesh, they are looking at Australia where previous experience matters,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity. While Rahul’s overall Test average might not be stellar, his ability to deliver crucial runs at significant overseas venues like Sydney, Lord’s, and Centurion, along with his diverse range of shots, gives him an edge over the young Mumbaikar.

Similarly, despite Dhruv Jurel’s promising debut in the England series, Rishabh Pant’s exceptional Test record and experience will see him retain the wicketkeeper’s spot.

The only slot up for contention is the third spinner position, with Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel vying for a place. While Axar performed well in the recent Duleep Trophy, scoring 86 runs and taking three wickets, Kuldeep’s performance was less impressive. However, Kuldeep’s past success against Bangladesh and his arsenal of variations might favor him on the anticipated good batting tracks in the upcoming series.

Ultimately, the team management’s decision to prioritize experience, particularly with the Australian tour in mind, puts Rahul and Pant in the driver’s seat for the Bangladesh series. While Sarfaraz and Jurel will have to wait for their opportunity, their talent and potential remain evident, with injuries potentially providing a pathway to the playing XI.
