**New Iberia, LA** – As Tropical Storm Francine approaches the Teche Area, Iberia Parish is taking steps to ensure the safety of its residents. With the storm expected to intensify into a hurricane, local officials are urging preparedness and offering support.
Several sandbag locations have been opened throughout the parish, including B.O.M. Fire Station, Grand Marais Fire Station, Coteau Fire Station, Delcambre water tower, Loreauville City Park, Lydia Fire Station, Jeanerette Fire Station and Rynella Fire Station. The City of New Iberia is also providing sandbags at the Acadian Ballpark.
Residents are responsible for filling their own sandbags, and shovels will not be provided at the locations.
In anticipation of the storm, the City of New Iberia has announced the closure of trash collection on Wednesday. The Pelican’s trash collection service will resume on Thursday and be reevaluated following the storm.
Schools in Iberia Parish have also closed on Tuesday and Wednesday to allow for hurricane preparations, including district offices, extracurricular activities, athletic practices, and student care centers.
Recognizing the potential for flooding, Iberia Parish President Larry Richard issued an emergency declaration on Monday, recommending voluntary evacuation for all residents south of U.S. 90 starting Monday. This recommendation extends to individuals living in areas vulnerable to storm surges, those with special needs, residents in low-lying areas along lakes, bayous, streams, and drainage structures, and anyone who has experienced flooding during previous heavy rain events.
Iberia Parish Government offices were also closed on Tuesday and Wednesday in consideration of the storm.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the storm’s progress and follow any additional instructions provided by local officials.
