Mon Sep 09 15:45:54 UTC 2024: ## Russian Influence Operation Targets American Social Media Stars Ahead of 2024 Election

**Washington D.C.** – The U.S. government has revealed that Russia is increasingly turning to American social media influencers to spread disinformation and influence voters ahead of the 2024 presidential election. According to intelligence officials, the tactic involves using both witting and unwitting Americans to amplify narratives that align with Russian interests.

The Justice Department has indicted two former employees of Russian state-funded media outlet RT, alleging they secretly funneled millions of dollars to a Tennessee-based media company, Tenet Media. Tenet then allegedly paid conservative influencers to create pro-Russia content, including anti-Ukraine messages.

The indictment states that while the influencers were unaware of their role in a Russian operation, the individuals receiving the funds from RT were aware of their connection to the Russian government.

This case is just one example of a wider Russian strategy to exploit American social media personalities. The Justice Department has also uncovered a separate operation known as “Doppelganger” where Russian entities impersonated legitimate Western news outlets to spread false information about U.S. political candidates and the war in Ukraine.

This operation involved targeting and recruiting Western influencers who share views sympathetic to Russia, offering them opportunities to collaborate on content that aligns with Russian narratives. Internal presentations from the Russian marketing agencies responsible for “Doppelganger” revealed a strategy to monitor and engage with 2,800 influencers, including 600 based in the U.S.

Intelligence officials warned that the American public should be cautious about content they encounter online, especially on social media, as it may be foreign propaganda disguised as authentic American commentary.

The U.S. intelligence community is now focusing on warning potential targets of foreign influence through “defensive briefings,” though the details of how and when these warnings are issued remain unclear.
