Mon Sep 09 14:29:29 UTC 2024: ## Putin’s United Russia Sweeps Regional Elections Amidst Opposition Crackdown

**Moscow, September 9, 2024** – Russia’s ruling party, United Russia, has secured a landslide victory in all regional elections held last week, according to official results released on Monday. This outcome, seen by authorities as a testament to President Vladimir Putin’s government’s popularity, comes amidst a severe crackdown on opposition voices in the country.

The elections, held between September 6th and 8th, saw the heads of 21 regions go to the polls, including the region of Kursk, currently facing Ukrainian offensives. United Russia claimed victory in 20 out of these 21 regions, with only one independent pro-Kremlin candidate winning in the remaining race.

Valentina Matvienko, head of Russia’s upper house of parliament, hailed the results as a decisive defeat for “attempts to destabilize the situation in Russia and divide our society.” United Russia also dominated regional parliament elections held concurrently, including in Moscow, where the independent political party Yabloko was barred from fielding candidates and lost all its seats.

However, the elections were marred by allegations of widespread irregularities and suppression of opposition. The Russian voting rights group Golos, whose co-chair is currently imprisoned, claimed a dramatic reduction in competition and instances of voter coercion. The group denounced the system of election commissions as failing to address long-standing problems of election fraud.

These elections come at a time when Russia faces a complex political landscape, marked by ongoing military operations in Ukraine and a strict crackdown on dissent. Critics argue that the elections were a sham, devoid of genuine competition and reflecting a manufactured consensus under Putin’s leadership.
