**WARSAW** – Poland has thwarted a cyberattack aimed at gaining access to sensitive information for blackmail purposes, according to the Polish government. The attack, which occurred in August, was attributed to digital saboteurs with ties to Belarusian and Russian special services.
Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski declared the incident a “de facto cyber war,” stating that the hackers targeted the Polish Anti-Doping Agency as a potential entry point to other institutions, including those involved in national security.
“The number of cybersecurity incidents has doubled in the past year,” Gawkowski acknowledged. However, he assured the public that a coordinated effort by the interior ministry, other agencies, and the military successfully prevented the attack.
Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak highlighted the government’s commitment to updating regulations on electronic communications in light of the escalating cyber threats. “We want the Polish authorities to have complete knowledge and control of all telecommunications transit through Poland,” he stated.
Poland’s announcement comes amidst a surge in cyberattacks across the EU and beyond, with Russia and China frequently implicated. The country previously reported thwarting attacks by the Russian-controlled hacking group Fancy Bear, which targeted German and Czech systems.
This incident further underscores the growing concern over cyberwarfare and the need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect critical infrastructure and national security.
