Mon Sep 09 14:45:29 UTC 2024: ## Northvolt Cuts Jobs, Scales Back Ambitions Amidst Battery Industry Struggles

**Skellefteå, Sweden** – Swedish battery maker Northvolt, once heralded as Europe’s leading battery hope, has announced significant job cuts and strategic changes as it struggles to overcome production delays and a slowdown in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

The company, which has raised a record US$15 billion in funding, has been plagued by problems at its flagship gigafactory in northern Sweden, coupled with European carmakers scaling back their EV ambitions.

Northvolt will pause production of cathode active material, selling one of its sites and relying on Chinese and Korean suppliers. The company is also seeking a buyer or partner for its energy storage business in Poland.

The cost-cutting measures will include “difficult decisions on the size of our workforce”, impacting the current 7,000 employees. Plans to build three additional gigafactories in Sweden, Germany, and Canada have also been delayed.

“Building a battery company from scratch is a profoundly capital-intensive and challenging endeavor,” said Peter Carlsson, Northvolt’s CEO. “Now it’s time to focus on the core, to learn from the past and to scale up our core business.”

Northvolt’s struggles reflect broader challenges facing the European automotive and battery industries. Intense competition from Asia, particularly China, is driving up costs and pushing companies to re-evaluate their strategies. VW has warned of potential factory closures in Germany, while Volvo has abandoned its goal of selling only EVs by 2030.

Despite being the first European company to produce a battery cell from a homegrown gigafactory in 2021, Northvolt has struggled to ramp up production in Skellefteå. The factory, with an annual capacity of 16 gigawatt hours, is currently producing less than 1GWh.

Northvolt has also faced funding hurdles, leading to the decision to cut investments and focus on its core cell manufacturing business in Skellefteå. The company will reassess its recycling and materials operations, as well as its sodium-ion battery technology, potentially seeking partners for its energy storage business.

This strategic shift marks a significant setback for Northvolt, raising questions about the future of Europe’s ambitions for a homegrown battery industry.
