The first week of the NFL season saw a flurry of massive bets placed at sportsbooks across the country, with high rollers testing their luck on a variety of games and markets. While some walked away with substantial profits, others saw their fortunes dwindle, illustrating the inherent risk and reward of sports betting.
One of the biggest wagers reported was a $300,000 bet on the Baltimore Ravens moneyline against the Kansas City Chiefs, placed by Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy at DraftKings. Portnoy would have pocketed $390,000 in profit if the Ravens had won, but a controversial overturned touchdown in the final seconds cost him the big payday.
Other notable large bets included a $220,000 wager on the Ravens to cover the spread against the Chiefs at South Point sportsbook, which ultimately lost. A $110,000 bet on the Chiefs to cover the spread at the same book resulted in a $100,000 profit for the lucky bettor.
In a remarkable turn of events, a DraftKings customer placed a 10-cent bet on a five-leg parlay involving the first touchdown scorer in five different games. Against odds of 137213/1, the unlikely bet cashed, netting the bettor a $13,721.30 return.
This weekend’s betting also saw some smaller, but still impressive, wins. A FanDuel Sportsbook customer placed a $25 bet on a same-game parlay involving multiple touchdowns in the Packers-Eagles game, turning a profit of $1,202. And a DraftKings customer who bet $20 on Saints wide receiver Shaheed to score the first touchdown in any of Sunday’s games cashed in, winning $1,500 after Shaheed scored a 59-yard touchdown just two minutes and 52 seconds into the game.
The first week of the NFL season proved that sports betting can be a rollercoaster of fortunes. While some high rollers took home substantial wins, others learned the hard way that even the biggest bets can come up short.
