**Paris, France** – The UK’s Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms, recently met with ParalympicsGB athletes at the 17th Summer Paralympic Games in Paris, highlighting the importance of disability inclusion and accessibility in sport.
The Minister engaged with several athletes, hearing about their journeys into sport and the impact of public funding in breaking down barriers for disabled individuals.
Sir Timms emphasized the government’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all children to reach their full potential, regardless of background or disability. He stated that the government is actively working to eliminate obstacles that prevent disabled people from participating in sport at all levels.
“It was a privilege to attend this year’s Paralympic Games and listen to the remarkable journeys of disabled athletes from around the world,” said Sir Timms. “The benefits of sport are endless, from promoting physical activity to fostering inclusive communities and challenging stereotypes.”
He also praised the UK’s investment of over £385 million in the Paris Olympic and Paralympic cycle, which has created opportunities for athletes from all backgrounds.
ParalympicsGB CEO, David Clarke OBE, welcomed the Minister’s presence and expressed gratitude for the government’s support. “We look forward to working with the Minister to ensure our Paralympic athletes continue to deliver world-beating performances, and to use their success as a catalyst for positive change for disabled people in the UK,” Clarke stated.
Particularly, ParalympicsGB and the Minister will collaborate on the “Equal Play” campaign, aiming to provide equal access to physical education for all children and increase participation rates among disabled children. Currently, only one in four disabled children participate in school sports.
