**FARGO, ND** – McKenna Johnson, a 6-foot-2 senior forward from Mandan High School, has announced her commitment to play basketball for North Dakota State University. The talented forward’s recruitment journey began with NDSU and ultimately ended with the Bison, as she felt a strong connection with the team and coaching staff.
Johnson, who emerged on the recruiting scene after her freshman season, received scholarship offers from several Division I schools, including South Dakota State and Fort Wayne. She garnered recognition for her impressive play, earning a spot on the Class AA all-state second team and leading the Western Dakota Association in rebounds per game.
While Johnson excels offensively, her defensive prowess is arguably her strongest asset. She became Mandan’s all-time leader in blocked shots this past season, showcasing her ability to be a game-changer on the defensive end. Her dedication to defense has been praised by former Mandan head coach Shaun Henderson, who described her as one of the best rim protectors in the state.
Johnson’s talent also caught the attention of top college programs while playing for the Minnesota Stars AAU team. Facing elite competition against players heading to powerhouse schools like LSU and South Carolina, she thrived and garnered recognition from coaches she never anticipated would be watching her play.
Despite initial intentions to leave the state, Johnson ultimately chose to stay close to home after a conversation with NDSU head coach Jory Collins. She joins a talented incoming class for the Bison, including Wayzata’s Sophie Hawkinson and Iowa native Karrington Asp.
Johnson’s commitment adds another talented player to a strong Western Dakota Association, which boasts at least four Division I prospects. Her presence, alongside other talented players like LeeLee Bell and Maggie Fricke from Minot and Brooklyn Felchle from Bismarck Legacy, promises exciting competition within the conference.
