Mon Sep 09 15:30:08 UTC 2024: ## Onam Celebrations Dampened by Tragedy and Rains, But Retailers Hope for Last-Minute Surge

Despite the annual return of Mahabali, the mood surrounding this year’s Onam celebrations in Kerala is subdued. The cancellation of several government-sponsored events in the wake of the Wayanad tragedy and ongoing rains has dampened festive spirits.

However, Kerala traders remain hopeful for a final surge in shopping ahead of Thiruvonam, which falls this weekend. The central government’s approval of a Rs 4000 crore loan for Kerala and the state government’s announcement of a bonus for employees are seen as potential catalysts for increased demand.

While the cancellation of public celebrations has negatively impacted business opportunities, some sectors are still optimistic. Apparel and consumer electronics retailers report brisk sales, with traditional Onam dress and premium appliances proving popular. Appliance makers like Godrej and Sony India have seen significant sales increases compared to last year.

However, tourism operators are pessimistic, citing a decline in non-resident Malayalis returning home for the festival. Caterers are also reporting reduced orders for Onam Sadya, the traditional feast. The four-wheeler market, while showing some improvement in August, has not yet seen a substantial rebound.

The upcoming weekend will be crucial to determine whether the last-minute shopping surge will be enough to offset the subdued sentiment and salvage the festive season for Kerala’s businesses.
