Mon Sep 09 14:45:41 UTC 2024: ## Memphis Police Officers Face Federal Trial in Tyre Nichols’ Death

**Memphis, TN** – The federal trial against three former Memphis Police officers charged in the death of Tyre Nichols is set to begin today with jury selection. Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith are facing charges of deprivation of rights, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice. The two other officers involved, Desmond Mills Jr. and Emmitt Martin III, have already pleaded guilty as part of a plea agreement.

The trial is expected to last approximately one month and will be closely watched by the public and media. Nichols’ parents, RowVaughn and Rodney Wells, plan to attend every day of the proceedings. “You want to make sure that what they’re saying is correct and you want to make sure that everything is going accordingly,” said RowVaughn Wells. “So you have to sit there and listen, even though you don’t want to.”

The demographic makeup of the jury will be a key point of interest as the trial progresses. The five officers were previously convicted on state charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping. Nichols’ death sparked widespread protests against police brutality and racial injustice.
