Tue Sep 10 13:06:58 UTC 2024: ## Derna Rebuilds One Year After Deadly Floods, but Scars Remain Deep
**Derna, Libya** – One year after devastating floods swept through the eastern Libyan city of Derna, leaving thousands dead and missing, residents are grappling with the loss and beginning the arduous task of rebuilding.
The floods, triggered by the collapse of two dams during torrential rains in September 2023, wiped out entire neighborhoods and left a haunting scar on the city. Many families lost multiple members, with only a handful of survivors. Mohsen al-Sheikh, a local actor, lost 103 members of his extended family. He is among many who remain haunted by the disaster, as the bodies of countless victims have yet to be recovered.
The tragedy has highlighted the impact of climate change, with experts confirming that the rainfall was amplified by human-induced climate change. In response, Libyan authorities have sentenced 12 officials responsible for dam maintenance to prison terms ranging from nine to 29 years.
Despite the overwhelming grief and ongoing uncertainty, efforts are underway to rebuild Derna. The east-based Libyan government has allocated $2 billion to a development fund for rebuilding the city. Construction projects are underway, including the rebuilding of al-Sahaba Bridge and the mosque next to it. New apartments are being constructed for those who lost their homes.
However, international observers warn that much more support is needed to restore Derna to its former glory. The United Nations has called for coordinated and efficient reconstruction efforts, as well as assistance in identifying human remains.
The future of Derna remains uncertain, with the fate of the dams and the city’s long-term reconstruction plan still up in the air. For those who survived, the journey to healing and rebuilding their lives will be long and arduous, and the scars of the devastating floods will likely remain for years to come.
