**RIGA, Latvia** – A Russian drone crashed in Latvia over the weekend, prompting Latvian officials to call for enhanced air defenses within NATO. The drone, identified as an Iranian-designed “Shahed-style” model, veered into Latvian airspace from Belarus before crashing near the eastern town of Rezekne.
Latvia’s military commander, Leonids Kalnins, confirmed that the armed drone was intended for attacks in Ukraine. The drone flew approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) into Latvian territory before crashing.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of the Baltic states, which rely on NATO for fighter jets due to the lack of their own air forces. Officials expressed concern that low-flying aircraft like drones can be difficult to distinguish from other airborne objects.
Latvia’s Defense Minister Andris Spruds emphasized the need to reinforce air defenses on NATO’s eastern flank, stating, “We are currently also strengthening our presence in air defense right on the eastern border, because this proves that our capabilities also need to be strengthened.”
Lithuania’s Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas echoed the call for enhanced defense systems and a stronger mandate for the air policing mission in the Baltic region to enable a more forceful response to similar incidents.
This incident follows reports of Russian drones crossing into Romanian and Polish airspace during previous attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. As winter approaches, Russia has escalated aerial attacks using drones, raising concerns in neighboring countries.
In response, Latvia’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s charge d’affaires to address the incident and announced plans to strengthen its land borders, airspace, and territorial waters.
The recent series of drone incidents has sparked debate in Poland about whether to begin shooting down Russian military objects entering its airspace. While Poland, a NATO member, has been hesitant due to concerns about potential damage from falling debris, the recent events underscore the growing threat posed by Russian drones to countries in the region.
