Tue Sep 10 16:17:00 UTC 2024: ## Olympic Sponsors Turn Away as Corruption and Costs Rise

**Tokyo, Japan** – Olympic sponsor Panasonic announced on Tuesday that it will terminate its contract with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the end of the year. The decision follows reports that other major sponsors, including Toyota, are also considering ending their partnerships.

Panasonic, one of the IOC’s 15 top sponsors known as “TOP,” has been involved with the Olympics since 1987. The company did not disclose the reason for its departure but stated that it was related to ongoing reviews of its sponsorship strategy.

The move comes amidst growing concerns about the IOC’s financial transparency and management. Multiple reports suggest that Toyota, which has a sponsorship contract worth $835 million, is unhappy with how the IOC utilizes sponsorship funds. Sources say the money is not effectively directed towards supporting athletes and promoting sports.

The IOC has been increasingly relying on sponsors from China, the Middle East, and India, moving away from its previous reliance on Japanese sponsors. This shift coincides with the Tokyo Olympics’ turbulent history, which included a one-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, limited fan attendance, increased costs, and several corruption scandals.

The Tokyo Games were plagued by allegations of corruption surrounding local sponsorships and contract awarding. French prosecutors investigated potential vote-buying in the 2013 decision to select Tokyo as the host city.

The IOC’s financial health, however, remains strong. The organization generated $7.6 billion in revenue in the previous four-year cycle. Despite the recent setbacks, the IOC expects to generate $3 billion from TOP sponsors in the upcoming cycle.

Panasonic’s withdrawal, coupled with potential departures from other major sponsors, raises serious questions about the IOC’s future and its ability to attract and retain sponsors in the face of mounting controversies.
