In a recent interview marking the 10th anniversary of “Whiplash,” Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons revealed a funny anecdote about his first meeting with director Damien Chazelle. Simmons, known for his intense portrayal of the abusive jazz instructor in the film, assumed Chazelle was a Black man due to his passion for the “quintessential American musical art form” of jazz, often associated with Black artists.
“I’m picturing Antoine Fuqua,” Simmons shared with Vanity Fair, referring to the Black director known for films like “Training Day.”
Simmons went on to describe his surprise when he arrived for the meeting and saw a young, “curly-haired kid from New Jersey.”
Chazelle, on his part, revealed that he had initially envisioned a different type of character for the role. However, after witnessing Simmons’s powerful performance during the first take, Chazelle realized Simmons was the perfect fit. “J.K. became that character, the character became J.K., and it became unthinkable to play the character any other way,” Chazelle said.
“Whiplash,” released in 2014, went on to receive critical acclaim and numerous awards, including Oscars, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
