**New York, NY** – Iran is aiming to reignite stalled nuclear talks with Western powers at the upcoming UN General Assembly in late September, according to Iranian officials. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani announced that Iran has already discussed reviving negotiations with EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian will address the General Assembly for the first time, coinciding with the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas/Hezbollah, both designated as terrorist organizations by the US.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had a positive phone conversation with Borrell in August, where they agreed that the UN summit presents a valuable opportunity to address the nuclear negotiations.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), originally signed in 2015, aimed to curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting international sanctions. However, the agreement collapsed in 2021 under the administration of Iran’s former president, Ebrahim Raisi.
Former US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the JCPOA and reimposed sanctions on Iran, leading the country to accelerate its production of highly enriched uranium. These sanctions remain in place under President Biden, including a global ban on Iranian oil imports.
The upcoming UN General Assembly will be a critical stage in the potential revival of nuclear talks and could lead to a resolution of the ongoing tensions between Iran and the West.
