**Winston-Salem, NC** – Wake Forest University has announced a new name for its ambitious mixed-use development project surrounding the university’s athletic complex: **The Grounds.** This 100-acre project, slated to cost $150 million, will feature retail, dining, multifamily residential, and office space, transforming the area into a vibrant community hub.
The project, a collaborative effort involving Wake Forest, the City of Winston-Salem, and developers Carter and Front Street Capital, promises to revitalize the area around Joel Coliseum, the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, and other venues, creating a 365-day-a-year destination.
“The Grounds has the opportunity to become Winston-Salem’s and northwest North Carolina’s living room,” said Coleman Team, president and managing partner of Front Street Capital. “We believe we have a pretty good idea what the community is looking for.”
The project will be developed in phases, with infrastructure work expected to begin by the end of the year. The office building and retail village are anticipated to be completed by summer 2026, followed by the multifamily project in summer 2027.
The name “The Grounds” was chosen after extensive community engagement, with residents expressing a desire for a cohesive brand identity for the area. The project aims to address a lack of engagement with the space, which has historically been perceived as “empty parking lots.”
The development will receive a $35 million grant from the state for infrastructure improvements, including new streets and greenways, further bolstering the area’s economic development.
“This project is more than just renderings and drawings; they are a roadmap to a new era of vibrancy and opportunity for our city,” said Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines.
The Grounds is expected to attract residents, students, employees, and event attendees, providing a diverse range of amenities and creating a lively atmosphere beyond just event days. The project is designed to benefit from the area’s robust event calendar, which includes Wake Forest athletic events, the Carolina Classic Fair, and numerous concerts and conventions.
With a focus on community engagement and a commitment to sustainable development, The Grounds promises to be a significant addition to Winston-Salem, transforming a previously underutilized space into a thriving and connected community hub.
