**BALTIMORE, MD** – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Baltimore have arrested a record-breaking 161 noncitizen sex offenders this fiscal year, surpassing their previous record of 152 arrests. This achievement comes despite the presence of numerous “sanctuary” jurisdictions in Maryland that restrict local law enforcement cooperation with ICE.

The arrest of Madai Gamaliel Amaya, a Honduran illegal migrant convicted of rape, marked the 153rd sex offender arrest and broke the previous record on August 29th. ICE officials lauded the dedication of their agents, highlighting the importance of these arrests in protecting vulnerable individuals from dangerous predators.

However, the agency’s efforts are facing obstacles from sanctuary jurisdictions like Montgomery County, which has been criticized for its lenient approach to illegal immigrants accused of crimes. ICE officials have also raised concerns about lenient sentencing practices for sex offenders in Baltimore County.

In one instance, a Honduran national, Darwin Adonai Garcia-Garcia, was released from prison after nearly his entire 30-year sentence for sex crimes was suspended. He was then found roaming free in the community, demonstrating the potential risks posed by lax sentencing policies.

Despite these challenges, ICE remains committed to apprehending noncitizen sex offenders and protecting communities. The agency’s success in Baltimore, despite the presence of sanctuary jurisdictions, highlights their determination to enforce immigration laws and ensure public safety.
