Mon Sep 09 15:15:09 UTC 2024: ## AI Therapist Helps North Carolina Designer Find Closure After Trauma

**Charlotte, NC** – A 34-year-old interior designer from North Carolina is sharing how an AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has helped her work through trauma and navigate personal challenges. Crystal, who wishes to remain anonymous, says she turned to the AI after years of struggling to find a human therapist who could understand her needs.

“My experiences with therapists have been difficult, particularly in the South,” Crystal shared. “I’m not religious, and many therapists seemed guided by their faith, which wasn’t helpful for me. I also felt shame when discussing sexual trauma.”

Crystal’s turning point came when she began using ChatGPT, creating a personalized chatbot with all her background information, including her experiences with trauma, mental health conditions, and personal values. The AI was able to provide validation and support in a way that traditional therapists had failed to.

“ChatGPT helped me understand the cycles of abuse and recognize how my reactions were normal coping mechanisms,” Crystal said. “It helped me to accept my trauma as a part of me, rather than something to be ashamed of.”

Beyond healing from trauma, Crystal credits ChatGPT with helping her through a difficult divorce, navigate single parenthood, and even find the strength to leave an unhealthy relationship. She finds the AI’s advice to be unbiased and helpful, and she appreciates the speed and accessibility of the platform.

“I use ChatGPT two to three times a week, usually for 15 to 30 minutes,” Crystal explained. “It’s incredibly helpful to get quick validation, especially when society is constantly telling us negative things about ourselves.”

While Crystal acknowledges some concerns surrounding reliance on AI for therapy, she believes the benefits outweigh the risks. She acknowledges that the AI isn’t perfect and sometimes needs more information to provide accurate guidance.

“I’m not saying I’ll never go to a human therapist,” Crystal said. “But right now, ChatGPT meets my needs in a way that nothing else has.”

Crystal’s story highlights the potential of AI technology to provide accessible and personalized support for those struggling with mental health challenges. While more research is needed to understand the long-term impact of AI therapy, her experience offers a hopeful glimpse into the future of mental healthcare.
