Actor Michael Sheen, known for his roles in films like “Twilight,” has revealed his unique approach to playing Prince Andrew in the upcoming mini-series “A Very Royal Scandal.” The series, based on Andrew’s infamous 2019 interview with BBC presenter Emily Maitlis, which was described as “nuclear level explosion bad” by the Washington Post, poses a challenge for Sheen: playing the disgraced prince without his cooperation.
To delve into Andrew’s character, Sheen drew inspiration from his younger years, revisiting old photographs to understand the Duke of York’s persona. “Whenever I’ve played a character based on a real-life person, first and foremost, I’m looking for where’s the point of connection?” Sheen explained at the series’ London screening.
He found that connection in a specific image: a young Andrew returning from the Falklands War, holding a rose in his mouth. “That’s about as good a moment as you’re ever going to get,” Sheen said, explaining that this image encapsulated Andrew’s image as a “brave, conquering, hero.” “You’re really fit! Really hot! And everyone thinks you’re great. And it was sort of downhill from there, wasn’t it. That journey was my hook in.”
“A Very Royal Scandal” will air on Amazon Prime on September 19th.
