The American Library in Paris has announced the five finalists for its 12th annual Book Award, recognizing outstanding works of literature that illuminate France and its culture. The award, established in 2012, carries a $5,000 prize and will be presented on November 7.

This year’s shortlist features diverse perspectives on French history and culture, spanning centuries and genres:

* **The Revolutionary Temper: Paris 1748–1789** by Robert Darnton offers a cultural lens on the decades leading up to the French Revolution.
* **House of Lilies: The Dynasty That Made Medieval France** by Justine Firnhaber-Baker is a captivating historical account of the Capetian dynasty.
* **This Strange Eventful History** by Claire Messud follows a family’s journey through the 20th century, reflecting on complex relationships with one’s homeland.
* **The Rebel’s Clinic: The Revolutionary Life of Frantz Fanon** by Adam Shatz provides a nuanced biography of the influential intellectual and activist.
* **Monet: The Restless Vision** by Jackie Wullschläger explores the life and art of Claude Monet, highlighting the influences that shaped his artistic vision.
