**CHITWAN:** Nepal’s Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Paudel, has announced that the government is taking steps to tackle the pressing issue of healthcare workforce shortages in hospitals across the country.
Speaking to reporters in Chitwan today, Paudel outlined the government’s plan to establish MBBS classes in state-run hospitals with at least 300 beds and nursing classes in facilities with at least 200 beds. He also mentioned an upcoming operational and maintenance survey of the health sector, aimed at ensuring each of the six provinces has at least one federal hospital with sufficient staffing.
Addressing concerns about doctor availability, Minister Paudel stated that the government is actively working to streamline the daily work schedule of doctors. He clarified that the ongoing discussion regarding maintaining outpatient departments (OPDs) on public holidays does not apply to Saturdays. He emphasized the government’s focus on managing the approximately 24 public holidays observed annually.
The government’s commitment to improving the healthcare workforce comes amidst growing concerns about the shortage of doctors and other healthcare professionals in Nepal. The new initiatives are expected to address this challenge and ensure better access to healthcare for the population.
