**Washington, D.C.** – A new poll suggests that Vice President Kamala Harris’ nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate has energized Black voters, increasing their likelihood to cast ballots in the upcoming election.
The Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that 69% of Black Americans are absolutely certain to vote on Election Day, up from 62% in April. This surge in turnout is particularly pronounced among young Black voters, especially women. The share of Black Americans under 30 who plan to vote has risen 15 points to 47%, while intent to vote among Black women under 40 has increased by 18 points to 57%.
The poll also reveals strong support for Harris among Black voters, with 82% favoring her over Republican nominee Donald Trump. This is significantly higher than Trump’s support among Black voters, which stands at only 12%.
Harris’ campaign has sought to counter Trump’s attacks on her role in the 2021 withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan by highlighting a letter from 10 retired generals and admirals, who assert that President Biden and Harris did their best with a difficult situation inherited from the Trump administration.
This news comes just one day before Harris and Trump face off in their first presidential debate. The debate is expected to focus heavily on the Afghanistan withdrawal, with Trump likely to capitalize on the deaths of 13 U.S. soldiers in a suicide bombing during the chaotic evacuation.
The poll, conducted from August 23 to September 3 among 1,083 Black Americans, has a margin of error of 3.2%.
