**London, UK** – In a bid to address overcrowding in prisons across England and Wales, the government has announced a change to the automatic release dates for some prisoners, allowing them to be released after serving 40% of their sentence instead of the current 50%. This change, which takes effect in September, is intended to free up prison capacity and ensure public safety.
“Prisons in England and Wales are operating at near full capacity,” stated a government spokesperson. “To protect the public, we need to make space within the prison system. While we understand this change may raise concerns, we are providing detailed information to ensure transparency.”
The early release applies to prisoners serving a single sentence and does not include those convicted of certain crimes, including:
* Murder
* Manslaughter
* Rape
* Robbery
* Kidnapping
* Some other serious offenses
Prisoners who are serving multiple sentences may also be eligible for earlier release depending on the nature of their sentences.
The government has stressed that the remaining portion of the sentence will be served under the supervision of probation services in the community. The impact of this change will be reviewed after 18 months.
Victims of crime who are part of the Victim Contact Scheme or the Victim Notification Scheme will be informed by their Victim Liaison Officer about any changes to the release date of the offender.
For those concerned about this change, independent and confidential support is available through the Victim and Witness Information website. Victims currently receiving support from a victim support service can also reach out to them for guidance.
