Tue Sep 10 14:06:59 UTC 2024: ## India-Pakistan Hockey Rivalry Could Resume: FIH President

**Muscat, Oman:** The International Hockey Federation (FIH) president, Tayyab Ikram, has expressed his desire to see a resumption of bilateral hockey matches between India and Pakistan, stating that the storied rivalry is beneficial to the sport’s growth.

Speaking exclusively to PTI, Ikram, a former Pakistan citizen now residing in Macau, said, “For us, given a choice, we want to start tomorrow with a bilateral hockey series between India and Pakistan. It is good for both India and Pakistan, and world hockey.”

The last bilateral series between the two nations took place in 2006, with Pakistan emerging victorious. Since then, political tensions have prevented further bilateral contests, limiting their meetings to international tournaments.

Despite the challenges, Ikram remains optimistic about the future of Pakistani hockey, emphasizing the need for financial support to revitalize the sport. He highlighted India’s significant role in hosting global events and attracting sponsorships, making it a crucial partner for the FIH.

Ikram also confirmed that the Hockey India League (HIL) is set to be revived after a seven-year hiatus, with a dedicated window in late December and early February allocated by the FIH.

Addressing the growing popularity of Hockey 5s, Ikram acknowledged its role in promoting the sport among smaller nations. While confirming the continued focus on 11-a-side hockey for the Olympic Games, he believes Hockey 5s offers a more accessible format, allowing participation across diverse levels.

He also emphasized the importance of engaging smaller nations to strengthen the federation, ensuring hockey’s continued stability within the Olympic movement.

Ikram is set to be re-elected unopposed for a second term as FIH president during the 49th Congress in Muscat on November 9th.
