London-based design studio Raw Edges has launched a revolutionary lighting collection, LightMass^, characterized by its impressive size-to-weight ratio and airy, gossamer-like structure. The collection, the first independent venture by the studio, embodies their experimental approach to design, incorporating cutting-edge additive technology and bio-based filaments.
LightMass^ is a testament to the studio’s exploration of innovative materials and forms. The collection is comprised of pendants, floor lights, and table lights, each named after its weight, ranging from 172g to 652g. These pieces are designed to be sculptural, lightweight, and sustainable, using minimal materials to achieve maximum impact.
“We wanted to achieve something sculptural and impressive that will be a pillar in space,” says Shay Alkalay, co-founder of Raw Edges. “At the same time we wanted it to be light in weight – almost like a mobile that can react to any little movement of air – and with a low carbon footprint through the light usage of material.”
The design concept challenges the traditional role of lampshades, which have become redundant with the advent of high-quality LED technology. LightMass^ instead embraces the sculptural potential of light itself, creating a delicate line drawing in the air when off, and mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow when on.
The collection’s unique patterned mesh surface, inspired by Victorian greenhouses and engineered bridges, is created using FDM additive technology and a custom filament composed of renewable and recyclable biopolymers. This zero-waste process further emphasizes the collection’s commitment to sustainability.
LightMass^ will be launched during the London Design Festival at the Wax Building in Shoreditch. The versatile nature of the design allows for customization of size, shape, pattern, and color, making it suitable for a wide range of spaces and projects.
