**DETROIT, MI** – Amidst a cooling enthusiasm for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid cars are seeing a surge in popularity among American consumers, according to a recent global survey by Ernst and Young (EY). The firm’s Mobility Consumer Index, which polled nearly 20,000 people across 28 countries, found that 21% of U.S. consumers are now considering purchasing a hybrid as their next vehicle – a 2% increase from last year.
This shift comes as interest in EVs cools. While 48% of Americans expressed interest in all-electric cars in 2023, that figure has dropped to 34% in 2024, marking the first decline in demand since 2020. According to EY, the drop is attributed to consumer concerns about the high cost of replacing EV batteries, which can range from $6,500 to $20,000. Range anxiety – the fear of running out of charge before reaching a charging station – and a lack of charging infrastructure are also deterring some consumers.
Hybrids, however, are seen as a more palatable alternative for many, offering the fuel efficiency and performance benefits of EVs while retaining the security of a traditional internal combustion engine. “With many still hesitant to go all in with EVs, hybrids offer an ‘easier-to-swallow’ solution,” said Raman Ram, a leader at EY’s aerospace, defense, and mobility division.
Automakers have taken notice of this trend. Toyota, the undisputed king of hybrid technology, has continued to focus on hybrid models. Ford has recently scrapped or delayed some EV plans while adding new hybrid vehicles to its lineup. Other manufacturers like Kia, Hyundai, and Honda have also seen strong hybrid sales, contributing to their overall August sales figures.
While hybrid cars generate more emissions than EVs, they still offer significant environmental benefits over traditional gasoline vehicles. According to The Seattle Times, over the lifespan of a car, a hybrid produces 53.6 tons of carbon emissions compared to 73.4 tons for a gasoline car.
As consumer demand shifts towards hybrids, the automotive industry appears poised for a renewed focus on this technology, providing drivers with a more accessible path towards a greener future.
