A 34-year-old Australian man, Wade Douglas Corbett, has been fined thousands of dollars after a drunken incident on a Jetstar flight from Perth to Sydney. Corbett’s disruptive behavior, including refusing to comply with safety instructions and locking himself in the airplane toilet, led to the pilot turning the plane around just an hour into the journey.
The flight’s unexpected return to Perth cost an estimated $20,000 in wasted fuel. Corbett was subsequently escorted off the plane by Australian Federal Police.
In court, Corbett pleaded guilty to disorderly behavior on an aircraft and failing to comply with safety instructions. He was fined $9,000 and ordered to pay an additional $8,630 to cover the cost of the wasted fuel.
Australian Federal Police Acting Superintendent Shona Davis stated that this incident serves as a reminder that “criminal behaviour on board can come at a heavy cost to the offender.” She emphasized that obeying airline staff instructions is far simpler than facing hefty fines and potential legal ramifications.
