Bungie, the developer behind the beloved space fantasy looter shooter Destiny 2, has unveiled its ambitious roadmap for the game’s future, dubbed “Frontiers.” This new plan marks a significant shift in how content will be delivered, moving away from the current single expansion per year model and embracing a more dynamic approach with two smaller, but more creative, expansions alongside four free major updates annually.
The roadmap kicks off in 2025 with two major expansions, code-named “Apollo” and “Behemoth,” scheduled for summer and winter respectively. Each expansion will break away from the traditional linear campaign structure, allowing players to explore various locations and storylines in a non-linear fashion.
“Apollo,” the first expansion, promises to kickstart a new narrative saga with a focus on character-driven adventures. Players will be able to progress through the expansion at their own pace, making choices that affect the story’s outcome.
Bungie is also implementing a new approach to free updates, replacing the previous episodic model with four substantial “Major Updates” per year. These updates will introduce fresh activities, reward content, and aim to refresh the core gameplay for all players.
While the exact details of these updates are still under wraps, Bungie has outlined a focus on streamlining the user interface, making loot acquisition clearer, and offering greater difficulty settings and rewards for veteran players.
This shift towards a more dynamic content delivery model signifies a major evolution for Destiny 2. The game has faced declining player numbers, and this roadmap aims to reignite interest by offering fresh experiences and a more accessible gameplay loop.
Whether “Frontiers” will succeed in revitalizing Destiny 2 remains to be seen, but the ambitious changes and focus on player feedback signal a commitment to the game’s long-term future.
