A 16-year-old boy has been sentenced to an 18-month rehabilitation order after pleading guilty to charges of violent disorder, criminal damage, and possession of an offensive weapon. The charges stemmed from his involvement in a large-scale disturbance in Bolton town centre earlier this year.
During the unrest, the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was captured on CCTV footage wielding a metal bar and kicking at passing cars with a group of other youths. The group also attempted to break into a convenience store, causing damage to the window and frightening the owner.
In a victim personal statement, the shop owner stated he felt targeted due to his race and was now fearful of further protests.
The court heard the teen had a previous conviction for possession of a knife and a difficult upbringing which had contributed to his involvement in the riots. Despite this, he was described as a hard-working and “fantastic” person at home.
District Judge Joanne Hirst emphasized the seriousness of the boy’s actions, stating that “almost all of the people involved in this shameful violence in our community are going to prison”. However, she also recognized the teen’s potential for rehabilitation and offered him a “final chance”.
The rehabilitation order will include 91 days of activities, 18 months of supervision, and a three-month electronically monitored curfew. The boy’s father was also ordered to pay £700 in compensation to the shop owner.
Judge Hirst warned the boy that any breach of the order would result in a 12-month detention sentence. “I want to keep you safe from organised crime groups that pick on boys like you,” she said.
