**Diyarbakır, Turkey** – The body of eight-year-old Narin Güran, who had been missing for three weeks, was found in a river near her home in the Bağlar district of Diyarbakır, Turkey. Narin was last seen on August 21st while walking with friends in the Tavşantepe neighborhood. Security footage showed her separating from the group to head home, taking a hill path.
Her disappearance sparked a nationwide search effort, with thousands of police officers and search-and-rescue teams deployed, as well as a social media campaign called “Find Narin.”
On Sunday, Turkey’s Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that Narin’s remains had been located. The child’s body was found in a sack with stones, concealed under branches and rocks.
Local authorities, including Diyarbakır Governor Murat Zorluoğlu, confirmed that Narin had been killed and her body disposed of in the river. At least 21 people have been detained in connection with the case, including Narin’s parents and eldest brother.
Narin’s uncle, Salim Guran, was arrested last week on suspicion of murder and deprivation of liberty. DNA samples taken from his car matched those taken from Narin’s clothes, according to Turkish media.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his condolences and vowed to personally follow the judicial process to ensure those responsible face justice. He described the murder as a “brutal” act that had deeply wounded the nation.
