**London** – Billy Porter, the Emmy-winning star of “Pose” and Tony-winning performer in “Kinky Boots,” is taking his talents to the music scene with his new album “Black Mona Lisa.” The album, a blend of pop, R&B, house, and soul, marks a departure for the multi-hyphenate artist, who is now embracing his pop persona under the name “Black Mona Lisa.”
“It’s been really interesting to try to figure out how to break in – can a pop star be birthed in their 50s? Yes. It’s me,” Porter declared in an interview.
While known for his dramatic roles, Porter emphasizes that he’s a singer first and foremost. “I’m a recording artist. That’s the gift,” he said, highlighting his musical roots which date back to his childhood.
“Black Mona Lisa” isn’t Porter’s first foray into music. He released five albums previously, but none were mainstream pop. The new album marks a shift in his musical identity, and he acknowledges the journey it took him to reach this point.
“That’s the journey of my authenticity. Now you get authentic Billy. That takes time,” Porter shared, reflecting on his previous album “Untitled,” which he released in 1997. At the time, he faced pressure from his label to conform to a certain image, which ultimately led to a commercial failure and a sense of self-loss.
Porter’s story is one of resilience and self-discovery. He’s now using his platform to advocate for authenticity and challenge the limitations placed on artists, particularly those of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.
“Particularly for a Black, queer man, unlike some of my white, straight counterparts, it actually does matter when I win an award. Doors that are bolted shut actually do open, it does change the landscape,” he stated.
As he continues to break barriers in both acting and music, Porter remains focused on his art and the impact he can make. With an upcoming biopic of James Baldwin in the works, his ambition knows no bounds.
“There are no limits,” he asserts, embracing his journey and the power of his voice, ready to leave his mark on the world.
