Mon Sep 09 14:35:35 UTC 2024: ## Basmati Crop to Flourish This Year, Prices Expected to Fall

The Indian basmati rice crop is expected to experience a bumper harvest this year, according to the All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA). The increased acreage and favorable weather conditions have led to projections of a 15-20% growth in production compared to last year.

Satish Goel, President of AIREA, attributed the anticipated increase to favorable monsoon rains and profitable returns for farmers in the previous year, encouraging them to expand their basmati cultivation.

While the overall crop size is expected to be larger, the price of basmati paddy has already begun to decline in anticipation of the abundant harvest. This decline is also influenced by the temporary suspension of rice imports by Iran, a major market for Indian basmati.

Goel further highlighted that the combined effect of increased production and existing carryover stocks will result in a 25% increase in overall basmati availability this year. He suggested that the government consider reducing or eliminating the minimum export price of $950 per tonne to stimulate exports and capitalize on the favorable supply situation.

India’s basmati rice exports have already witnessed a significant 15% growth during the April-July period of the current financial year, reaching $2.036 billion, driven by strong demand from key markets such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and the USA. This positive trend is expected to continue, with the projected increase in production adding to the favorable outlook for India’s basmati rice industry.
