Direct selling giant Amway has announced a significant investment in research and development (R&D) in India, highlighting its commitment to the country as a priority market. The company has established four new R&D labs in Gurugram, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Dindigul, at a cost of $4 million. These labs will focus on developing innovative product solutions in the food, oral care, beauty, and personal care segments.
Amway India’s Managing Director, Rajneesh Chopra, stated that India is a top priority market for the company and ranks among its top markets globally. The company is strategically focusing on four key areas: healthy aging, fitness, weight management, and beauty. The investment in R&D labs aligns with these strategic goals and aims to address the evolving needs of Indian consumers.
Chopra revealed that Amway India currently has 5.5 lakh distributors and caters to a consumer base of around 2 million. The company plans to expand its reach to five million consumers over the next five years, which is expected to elevate India to one of its top three markets.
Amway is particularly bullish on the growth potential of its nutrition business in India, citing the increasing prevalence of lifestyle diseases and the growing demand for convenient and nutritious food solutions, particularly breakfast options. Notably, nutrition contributes nearly 60% of the company’s overall business.
Shyam Ramakrishnan, Director of Innovation and Science for India and Southeast Asia, emphasized Amway’s commitment to leveraging top talent in India and globally to develop differentiated nutrition, food, and beauty products. These products are specifically targeted at the Indian and Southeast Asian markets and have the potential for global distribution.
Chopra addressed the recent challenges faced by Amway from investigative agencies, stating that the company has been working to address these issues and remains committed to compliance with all laws and regulations. He asserted that Amway operates in over 100 countries and territories and has always maintained a strong commitment to ethical practices.
The company is navigating these challenges amidst a money-laundering investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which filed a chargesheet against Amway India last year, accusing it of siphoning off funds to overseas banks. Amway has maintained its innocence, claiming the investigation relates to an old case dating back to 2011, and has cooperated fully with the authorities.
