**San Diego, CA** – American soccer icon Alex Morgan concluded her illustrious career on Sunday, playing the first 15 minutes of the San Diego Wave FC’s 4-1 loss to the North Carolina Courage.
Morgan, a two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist, was visibly emotional as she bid farewell to the sport. After removing her boots at midfield and hugging her teammates, she waved to the crowd of 26,516, who chanted her name.
“What a ride it’s been,” Morgan told the crowd. “I want to thank my teammates, family, and fans who have supported me every step of the way.” She also expressed gratitude for the fans who had travelled from across the country to witness her final game.
Morgan announced her retirement on Thursday, saying this would be her last game. In a heartfelt video message, she thanked her family, teammates, coaches, staff, and fans for their support throughout her career. “This decision wasn’t easy,” she said, “but I felt in my heart and soul that this was the right time.”
Adding an unexpected twist to her retirement announcement, Morgan revealed she is expecting her second child. “This isn’t the retirement video I expected, because Charlie is going to be a big sister,” she said. “I’m pregnant.”
Morgan’s career spanned 15 years, marked by success both domestically and internationally. She played college soccer for the University of California, Berkeley, was drafted first overall by the Western New York Flash, and helped lead the Portland Thorns to the championship in the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League season. She also enjoyed stints with the Orlando Pride, Lyon, and Tottenham Hotspur.
“Alex has been an extraordinary talent, a fierce competitor, and an inspiring steward of the game,” said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. “Her dedication to growing our sport and empowering women and girls has transcended our soccer community.”
Morgan scored 123 goals in 224 games with the US Women’s National Team, contributing significantly to their triumphs at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and the 2012 Olympics.
“Success for me is defined by never giving up and giving your all,” Morgan stated. “I’m proud of the impact I’ve had in pushing for global investment in women’s sports.”
As she steps away from the field, Morgan leaves behind a legacy of athletic prowess and advocacy for women’s sports. With her new chapter as a mother of two on the horizon, she continues to inspire a generation of young athletes and women.
