**Abuja, Nigeria -** The embattled national chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has declared that the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election is no longer reserved for former candidate, Peter Obi.
Abure made this announcement during a press briefing following the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday.
He stated that the NEC had reviewed the decision to reserve the presidential and governorship tickets for Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, respectively, and decided to open all party tickets, from the presidency down to the House of Assemblies, to all qualified Nigerians.
Abure further refuted any automatic second-term ticket for Governor Otti, asserting that the position would be open to competition. He also condemned the recent gathering in Abia State, which Otti had convened to install a caretaker committee led by former Senator Nenadi Usman, deeming it illegal and in violation of the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
“No governor, no matter how highly placed, will come and with a fiat, dissolve the NWC, dissolve state councils, or dissolve LG councils,” Abure stated, emphasizing the power of the National Working Committee and its mandate, which he vowed to defend.
The chairman criticized Obi and Otti for their actions, calling it a “betrayal of everything the Labour Party stands for” and a move that promotes division within the party. He accused them of seeking to install a “new leadership” without the authorization of the NEC.
This declaration comes amidst growing tension within the Labour Party, with allegations of internal power struggles and disagreements following the party’s electoral performance in the 2023 elections.
