Sat Sep 07 23:33:03 UTC 2024: ## NSW to Trial Average Speed Cameras for All Drivers

**Sydney, Australia** – In a move to curb speeding and improve road safety, New South Wales (NSW) will trial average speed cameras for all drivers, not just trucks, on two stretches of highway. This marks a significant shift in the state’s approach to road safety, aligning with practices employed in other Australian states and countries like the UK, Norway, and the Netherlands.

The trial will take place on a 15km stretch of the Pacific Highway between Kew and Lake Innes and a similar length of the Hume Highway, north of Gundagai. These locations have been identified as high-risk areas, with six fatalities and 33 serious injuries recorded in the past five years.

Speeding drivers caught during the first 60 days of the trial will receive written warnings, but financial and license penalties will be enforced thereafter.

“We aim to be as rigorous as possible to be sure they will also reduce road trauma in NSW,” said Roads Minister John Graham.

The move comes as speeding continues to be a major contributor to road deaths in NSW, accounting for 44% of fatalities in 2023, with three-quarters of these occurring in regional areas.

A comprehensive communications campaign will be launched to inform drivers about the trial and its implementation.
