**Jiribam, Manipur:** Five people were killed in fresh violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Saturday, police reported. The violence erupted after militants fatally shot a man in his sleep, sparking heavy gunfire between members of warring communities.
The incident comes amidst an ongoing security operation in Churachandpur district, where three militant bunkers were destroyed after insurgents launched rocket attacks. Earlier this week, a retired police officer’s house was torched in Jiribam, despite a recent agreement between communities to restore peace.
The district witnessed violence despite an agreement reached between Meitei and Hmar communities to restore normalcy. However, several Hmar tribal bodies denounced the agreement, claiming they were unaware of it.
Following the latest incidents, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh held an emergency meeting with MLAs to discuss the worsening law and order situation. Singh also briefed Governor L. Acharya on the developments.
The ongoing violence has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands since May 2023. Jiribam, initially spared from the ethnic clashes, has been engulfed in violence since June, forcing many to seek refuge in relief camps.
