Sun Sep 08 11:55:01 UTC 2024: ## Assam to Mandate NRC Receipt for Aadhaar Card Applications
**Guwahati, October 1:** Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a stringent new policy requiring all Aadhaar card applicants to submit their National Register of Citizens (NRC) application receipt numbers. The new policy, with a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), will come into effect on October 1st.
Sarma stated that this measure aims to curb illegal immigration and ensure that only genuine residents are issued Aadhaar cards. He highlighted the fact that the number of Aadhaar applications received in Assam has surpassed the state’s population, with anomalies detected in four districts.
“The NRC application receipt is a crucial document in verifying an individual’s residency status,” said Sarma. “This new policy will ensure that the Aadhaar system is not misused and that we can effectively combat illegal immigration.”
The Assam government has been actively working to finalize the NRC, a controversial initiative aimed at identifying illegal immigrants in the state. This latest policy is seen as a continuation of that effort and is expected to face scrutiny from various quarters.
