**Howard Beach, NY** – A disturbing trend of animal sacrifice has been escalating in the parkland surrounding Jamaica Bay, leaving animal rescue groups and local officials appalled. Over the past month, at least nine mutilated or deceased animals have been discovered in Spring Creek Park and the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, including five pigs with partially severed ears, a decapitated chicken head, and a dead dog with a broken neck.
According to Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue, these incidents appear to be linked to a sect of Hindu devotees who worship the goddess Kali and practice animal sacrifice. While some members of the Hindu community have condemned this practice, calling it a misinterpretation of religious texts, others acknowledge that certain faith traditions, including Santeria and voodoo, also involve animal sacrifice.
The US Supreme Court has upheld the right to animal sacrifice on religious grounds, but New York State law prohibits aggravated cruelty to animals. Despite the disturbing trend, the NYPD has not received any 911 calls related to animal abuse in the area.
Local animal rescue groups and elected officials have expressed their alarm and are calling for immediate action. Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Queens) has vowed to work with federal partners and religious groups to put an end to this practice. “Cruelty to animals is a crime, and this is something we cannot tolerate,” Ariola said.
This recent surge in animal sacrifices has reignited a debate about the balance between religious freedom and animal welfare, and the need for increased awareness and enforcement of animal cruelty laws. While some argue for stricter regulations and legal action, others advocate for a more nuanced approach that involves dialogue with religious communities and educational outreach.
