**CHICAGO** – Renowned attorney Alan Dershowitz has announced his departure from the Democratic Party, citing what he described as an “anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, anti-Zionist” atmosphere at the recent Democratic National Convention. Dershowitz, a Harvard Law professor emeritus, made the announcement during an interview with radio host Zev Brenner.

The decision comes amid heightened tensions within the Democratic Party over the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Progressive voices have criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the conflict, accusing it of failing to adequately restrain Israel. Some have gone further, alleging the administration’s complicity in genocide. These tensions have also sparked concerns about rising anti-Semitism, particularly within progressive circles.

Dershowitz specifically pointed to Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision not to preside over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress in July, as well as the rhetoric he witnessed at the DNC. He expressed particular disgust at speeches delivered by Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders, labeling them “anti-Zionist” and “anti-Jewish.”

Dershowitz has not yet decided who he will vote for in the upcoming election but said he wants to see how the candidates address the situation in Iran and how they plan to support Israel.

While he expressed his dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party, Dershowitz acknowledged that he does not believe Vice President Harris is personally antisemitic. He suggested that pressure from the party’s “hard left” influenced her decision not to pick Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Jewish candidate, as her running mate.

Dershowitz’s departure marks a significant shift for the prominent attorney, who has a history of representing controversial figures like O.J. Simpson and Harvey Weinstein. His decision reflects the growing anxieties over anti-Semitism and the complex political landscape surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
