**ASHEVILLE, N.C.** – A rare and historically significant copy of the U.S. Constitution is set to go under the hammer at Brunk Auctions in Asheville on September 28th. This copy, one of only eight known to still exist, is believed to be the only one of its kind in private hands.
The document, printed in 1787 after the Constitutional Convention, was sent to the states for ratification. It is one of approximately 100 copies signed by Charles Thomson, the secretary of the Congress of the Confederation. The auction house has set a minimum bid of $1 million, though there is no set reserve price.
The document was discovered in a neglected room in Edenton, North Carolina, inside a filing cabinet that once belonged to Samuel Johnston, the governor of North Carolina from 1787 to 1789.
Experts believe this copy represents a crucial link between the government and the people. It is the document that the Founding Fathers sent to the states, asking for their approval and empowering them to shape the nation’s future.
The auction will also feature other historic documents, including a 1776 first draft of the Articles of Confederation and a 1788 journal from the North Carolina convention that debated the ratification of the Constitution.
While the value of this particular copy of the Constitution is difficult to estimate, its historical significance is undeniable. It represents a pivotal moment in American history, connecting the writers of the Constitution directly to the people who would ultimately determine its fate.
