**Guwahati, India:** In a significant move towards protecting the interests of indigenous people, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that his government will implement 52 recommendations made by the Justice Biplab Sarma Committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The implementation of these recommendations, which aim to safeguard the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of Assamese people, is scheduled to be completed by April 15th.
Sarma, addressing a press conference in Guwahati, explained that the implementation of the committee’s recommendations will be divided into three parts. 52 recommendations will be directly implemented by the state government, while five will be jointly implemented by the state and central governments. The remaining recommendations fall under the jurisdiction of the central government.
Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, signed in 1985, is a crucial provision focused on protecting the identity of Assamese people. The accord, a landmark agreement between the Indian government and leaders of the Assam movement, addressed the issue of illegal immigration into Assam from neighboring countries, particularly Bangladesh.
Earlier on Wednesday, the state cabinet had decided to implement 57 out of the 67 recommendations made by the committee. The cabinet discussed in detail various recommendations made by the panel aimed at safeguarding and protecting the land, language, and culture of Assam’s indigenous people.
