– Dahi Handi festival is being celebrated in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.
– During the festival, ‘Govindas’ form human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd, known as dahi handis.
– Dahi handis decorated with flowers are hoisted at various locations across the city, and Govindas dressed in colourful attire travel around to participate in breaking them.
– Some Dahi Handi events in Mumbai and surrounding regions have become famous for their hefty prize money, celebrity presence, and entertainment programs, drawing large crowds.
– Police have deployed over 11,000 personnel in Mumbai to maintain security during the festivities, while in Pune, 35 mandals have come together to organize a joint Dahi Handi event to reduce traffic congestion.
– This joint celebration in Pune will also help reduce noise pollution and inconvenience to the public.
