The Dahi Handi festival is being celebrated in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra to mark Krishna Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. During the festival, ‘Govindas’ form human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd. Some events have hefty prize money and draw huge crowds, with police deployed for security. In Pune, 35 mandals have come together to organize a single Dahi Handi event to reduce traffic congestion. The joint celebration will also reduce noise pollution.
