The Tamil Nadu Health Department, led by Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, is set to launch a public awareness campaign promoting the health benefits of Pazhaiya Soru (fermented rice). This initiative follows a five-year research study by doctors at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital (SMCH), which demonstrated the nutritional advantages of consuming fermented rice. The announcement was made on Monday during a scientific program at SMCH.

The research highlighted that fermented rice contains essential nutrients, beneficial bacteria, and micro-nutrients, including dietary fiber, resistant starch, protein, iron, zinc, selenium, and B-complex vitamins. It has also been shown to promote gut health and aid in recovery from gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome. The research was led by S. Jeswanth, professor and head of Surgical Gastroenterology at SMCH, and builds on work done since 2022 with the establishment of a Department of Regenerative Medicine and Research at SMCH with funding of ₹2.44 crore.
