Mon Jan 05 07:02:20 UTC 2026: Headline: Trump Casts Doubt on Alleged Ukrainian Drone Attack on Putin’s Residence as Kyiv Denies Involvement
Washington, D.C. – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has contradicted initial reports of a Ukrainian drone attack on Vladimir Putin’s residence, stating he does not “believe that strike happened.” This statement comes after Russia’s Defense Ministry released a video last week purportedly showing a downed drone it claimed was launched by Ukraine targeting Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region.
Ukraine has vehemently denied any involvement, accusing Russia of staging a “false-flag” operation to undermine ongoing peace negotiations. Western allies have largely echoed Ukraine’s skepticism regarding the alleged attack. The Kremlin initially stated that the incident would harden its stance in peace talks.
Trump, speaking to reporters on Air Force One, said that after U.S. officials reviewed the evidence, they did not believe Ukraine was targeting Putin’s residence. The incident unfolded amidst efforts to broker a ceasefire in the nearly four-year-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine. European leaders are scheduled to meet in France to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire plan that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described as “90 percent ready.”
Meanwhile, in Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities reported a deadly overnight Russian attack on the Kyiv region, resulting in the first casualties in the capital this year. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that a Russian strike ignited a fire at a medical facility in the Obolonskyi district, killing one and injuring another. Damage to towns, villages, and critical infrastructure was also reported in the Kyiv region, resulting in the death of an elderly man. Russia has yet to comment on the overnight strike.
