Tamil Nadu Launches Initiative to Bring High-Speed Internet to Rural Areas

TIRUCHI, India – January 5, 2026 – The Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation Ltd. (TANFINET) is taking a significant step towards bridging the digital divide by enlisting local partners to provide reliable internet access to rural communities across the state. As part of the BharatNet project, TANFINET is seeking district-level franchisee partners (DLFPs) to maintain and operate the fiber optic network at the block and panchayat levels.

TANFINET plans to select at least two DLFPs per district, dividing each district into sub-divisions of two to six blocks. These partners will be responsible for ensuring uninterrupted internet connectivity by maintaining the Optic Fibre Cable (OFC) and Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), responding to faults quickly, and adhering to strict service level agreements.

Interested parties can apply through the TANFINET online portal (https://tanfinet.tn.gov.in) until January 14th. A refundable application security deposit of ₹25,000 is required for each block division. Successful applicants will need to pay a security deposit of ₹2 lakh per block before receiving work orders.

According to an official press release, nearly 95% of the BharatNet project has been completed across 37 districts in Tamil Nadu. This initiative promises to bring high-quality internet services to even the most remote areas of the state, fostering economic growth, education, and improved access to vital information.
